Eugene may finally get a
soccer football club of its very own. While this isn’t technically beer news, it is great for beer. Lane United FC is seeking support in bringing a league to Eugene and even competing against the likes of the Portland Timbers. Here is a quote from their site:
“LUFC is in ongoing discussions with the United Soccer Leagues (USL) to create a the first of LUFC’s franchises in Eugene by 2014. The USL is well aware of the enthusiasm for soccer in the Northwest and is looking to establish three teams in Eugene — a USL-Pro team, a women’s W-League team, and a Professional Development League (PDL) team.
The PDL team will be the first to take the pitch in 2014 and will compete in the Northwest Division against the like of the Portland Timbers U-23, Seattle Sounders U-23, andVancouver Whitecaps U-23 teams.”
Eugene has big fans of the sport already. Notably the Eugene Timbers Army Echo Squadron. The group will likely be as fiercely loyal and fanatical as they are for Timbers. LUFC plans to renovate the aging Civic Stadium. Additional seating and of course beverages.
Football and beer go hand in hand. Ninkasi obviously sees this and has already sponsored the movement. You can too! You can become a Lifetime Charter Member or an Annually LUFC member or donate. Becoming a member also entitles you to a vote in the future of the LUFC.
“By becoming a member of LUFC, you are part of a community movement to bring elite soccer to Lane County. In addition, you will be part of an Advisory Board which gets to vote on key questions in the development and operation of the club.”
You can also support by buying merchandise. My favorite is the red home jersey featuring “Ninkasi Brewing Company” on the front.
Sports are a big deal here in Eugene. The Em’s have a loyal following and of course the nationally followed Oregon Ducks. If the success of the Portland Timbers is any indication, the LUFC should be a huge hit. Personally I can’t wait to have a Total Dom and see them take the pitch for the first time.
